Between Lisbon and the Algarve, stretching eastwards to the Spanish border, lies Alentejo in southern Portugal – a region of vast horizons, whitewashed villages, and a palpable sense of authenticity.

At its heart is the great Alqueva Lake, an impressive inland body of water on the Guadiana River that has become the region’s focal point. Here, stargazing beneath one of Europe’s darkest skies, relaxing water-based experiences, vineyards and olive groves, and iconic hilltop villages such as Monsaraz come together to create a setting perfectly suited to slow travel and meaningful encounters with local culture.

From cork craftsmanship, ceramics, woven textiles, and basketry to embroidery and regional gastronomy, visitors throughout the region encounter vibrant traditions and exceptional artisanal skills. These heritage practices are carefully preserved by local communities while being reinterpreted through contemporary creativity.

The international promotion of Alentejo, implemented by ARPTA, is supported by the European Union through the Alentejo 2030 and Portugal 2030 programmes. This funding contributes to the positioning of the region as an international tourism destination and is aligned with the objectives of the European Union’s Cohesion Policy in the fields of sustainable development, culture, and tourism.
